چکیده

The emittance as the available phase space area is de®ned as the product of the elementary cell area and exp(S), where S is the normalized entropy of a particle beam. The de®nition is based on the fact that the factor exp(S) can be interpreted as the number of the occupied cells. For particle beams, a closed expression for the emittance in terms of the phase space distribution function is obtained which is independent of . To compute the emittance of the radiation beam, it is necessary to ®nd the eigenvalues of the correlation operator. An explicit solution is found for the case of a partially coherent radiation beam which is a stochastic superposition of coherent Gaussian beams with a Gaussian probability distribution. Such a beam is a reasonable model for undulator radiation by beam of electrons. From the requirement that the radiation emittance reproduces the particle beam emittance in the incoherent limit, the elementary cell area is determined unambiguously to be , the radiation wavelength. The emittance in the coherent limit then becomes .

Emittance and entropy of electron beams

Creating high-brightness electron beams, which have many practical applications, is done with cathodes in regions with large electric field by field emission. The brightness is high when the current is high and the volume of the beam in phase space is small. An estimate of the phase space volume is the rms emittance. The simulations described in this report show that the beam emitted by a gated...

Artificial Collisions, Entropy and Emittance Growth in Computer Simulations of Intense Beams

Artificial collisions during particle tracking with selfconsistent space charge lead to diffusion-like, numerical effects. The artificial collisions generate a stochastic noise spectrum. As a consequence the entropy and the emittance can grow along periodic focusing structures. The growth rates depend on the number of simulation macro-particles and on the space charge tune shifts. For long-term...

Preservation of beam emittance in the presence of ion motion in future high-energy plasma-wakefield-based colliders.

The preservation of beam quality in a plasma wakefield accelerator driven by ultrahigh intensity and ultralow emittance beams, characteristic of future particle colliders, is a challenge. The electric field of these beams leads to plasma ions motion, resulting in a nonlinear focusing force and emittance growth of the beam. We propose to use an adiabatic matching section consisting of a short pl...
